The Funding Mechanisms of Core Infrastructures in Society (part 2)

As written in a previous post, the first metro systems used the template of the first railroad companies to structure their business operations. It is copied over and over again. But does it still serve ?

Probably not, it was designed for a different age with it own challenges and own opportunities. Our challenges are different and we have the opportunity to co-design a shared and decentralized digital infrastructure.

A new template can be used:
– communicate an concept idea within a community of potential co-designers and users;
– the community will start to work on it and the value creation model will get defined;
– rules to start up and operate will get programmed for and with the community in the shared digital infrastructure;
– coordinated action within a community will will create value, actions get registered and exchange of value will happen.

A far more complex paradigm is emerging than the paradigm of the First and Second Industrial Revolutions. In this article Otto Scharmer describes the shift we are experiencing.

We are witnessing the development of the core digital infrastructure that underpins the emerging story. The core digital infrastructure in society has the potential to connect everyone and everything and to
introduce new value exchange systems.

The core digital infrastructure by itself will get funded in new ways, more about it in a next post.

The Funding Mechanisms of Core Infrastructures in Society (part 1)

The Metropolitan Railway (Met) got in 1854 the permission to build the first line of the Underground what later became the London Metro System (full hitory of The London Underground is here).

What template did the MET use to set up the company ?
1. What is the income stream for the service ?
2. What are the costs to start-up the income stream ?
3. What are the profits we can make ?
4. Define the issue of shares and sell the promise of profits in return to get cash to start up the service.
5. Start-up and run the service, produce jobs and profits.

The first rail roads used the shareholder model, the model was copied by the MET and almost all the infrastructures that followed got funded with it. Shareholders, workers, trade unions and governments got their stories of aligned interests. Society got fueled and power got defined on three axes, namely:
1. Income
2. Say
3. Ownership

But can we hold on on that story ? Let’s consider the investement of Google in Belgium. Does the traditional story of aligned interests between funding, jobs, income, say and ownership really fit ?
We believe we can create a better by reconsidering the funding mechanism for the core infrastructure of the new age.

Nothing is permanent in this wicked world – not even our troubles.

Mind The (learning) Gap

In 2012 I decided to travel for a while because I was fed up with the (potential) loss of digital privacy while we can do better. In Shanghai (China) I came inspired by the history of the shared mobility infrastructure and I started to integrate the Metro Map in Co:Inpetto’s branding.

At that time I wasn’t aware that the role model of the world’s first metro system is so rich. It is an inspiring example of creativity and collective action, which we need today – agian -.

But HOW we will innovate and fund will make a huge difference.

The Metro is a typical infrastructure of the Industrial age, an age we’re leaving. We are building the core infrastructure for the new story, the story of a prosperous digital age.

The World’s First Metro System

Click and learn about more about the world’s first metro system. And let’s take the development of the world’s first metro system as a role model, a role model of the development of an infrastructure. Incredible collective action makes a strong social vision alive.

We are doing it again:
a decentralized digital infrastructure is next.

How and why will the innovation process of a decentralized digital infrastructure differ from the role model ? More about it in our next Tuesday Posts.

Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.
